The Psycho-Acoustic Laboratory was established in 1940 to conduct research on speech, hearing, and communications during World War II. It continued to operate after the War and in 1962 it was renamed the Laboratory of Psychophysics. These records document the activities of the laboratory.

This collection chiefly chronicles Henry Edwards Scott, Jr. (1900-1990) studies in the fields of chemistry, engineering sciences, English, mathematics, physics, and music at Harvard University primarily from 1918 to 1922, and his participation in student organizations including the Pi Eta Club and the Harvard Glee Club. A drawing and a commercial advertisement demonstrate Scott’s career as an artist.

Stanley Smith Stevens (1906-1973) was a physicist and professor at Harvard University. He was an authority on the physics of sensory perception, especially hearing. He was director of the Psycho-Acoustics Laboratory and the Psychophysics Laboratory at Harvard. This collection documents Stevens' research and professional activities.
