Illustrated journal kept by boatsteerer John Julius Bertoncini while aboard the whaling schooner Penelope on a whaling voyage from San Francisco to the Artic Ocean, April 18, 1900 to September 7, 1902. The journal contains 50 water color illustrations that show the Penelope sailing, sailors engaged in whaling, and ship maintenance in the Artic Ocean. Also includes a crew list, the dimensions and tonnage of the schooner, and which crew members captured the whales.

Scope and Contents: Logbook kept by Charles M. Rockwell, a crew member of the brigantine Betsy, dated 1795-1796. The ship, captained by Jonathan Lester, voyaged from New London, Connecticut, to Dutch colony Surinam. In a February 22, 1796, entry, Rockwell wrote that the crew was preparing to celebrate George Washington's birthday. Ledger kept by blacksmith Hiram H. Bidwell, 1826-1836. Bidwell worked and lived in the Berkshires, Massachusetts during the early 19th century. The ledger contains entries for shoeing horses, work performed, fixing whippletrees, and recording loans given to people.
