Biographical / Historical

A benevolent institution in Boston, Massachusetts, the Bethany Union for Young Women was founded in 1889 by Universalists and opened in 1890 with the object of providing a home for young women "who are forced, by the keen competition of a large city, to work for small wages." Bethany House moved to its current Newbury Street location in 1940. In October 2012, Bethany House merged with the Unitarian Universalist Urban Ministry and provides housing, meals, and connections for women aged 18-30.
