Scope and Contents

Nine minutes and forty-five seconds of footage includes scenes aboard the S.S. Taiyo Maru. Baseball footage shows a marching band, as well as players from the United States and Japanese teams from Keio and Waseda Universities. Other footage shows an airplane flying in the sky, and scattered throughout the footage are several text slides with Japanese characters and some English words.

Biographical / Historical

In 1931, the S.S. Taiyo Maru was owned by the Nippon Yusen Kaisha (NYK Line) and traveled the company's San Francisco route. The ship was originally built for battle in World War I, and in November, 1941, it arrived in Honolulu to conduct reconnaissance of Pearl Harbor's naval base.
