Film reels, 1926-1934

Scope and Contents

Includes eleven film reels, mostly 16mm, nine of which have been digitzed. The nine film reels that have been digitized are re-housed in archival cans; digital copies are located on the external hard drive. Black-and-white footage, which was presumably filmed by Henry Chauncey, show a variety of scenes from Japan, such as the Nara Park, Tokyo, and Kobe, as well as in Shanghai and Hong Kong, China. While visiting these locations, the Harvard baseball team members, staff, and their female guests are shown sight-seeing, engaging with locals, and walking the streets. There is also footage of the visitors aboard multiple ships, including the S.S. Taiyo Maru and the M.S. Tatsuta Maru. The film reels show several baseball practices and games, mostly between the Harvard University team and the university teams of Keio University and Waseda University. Additionally, there is of footage of a Damai Baseball team practice, which appears to show American baseball players in Damai uniforms; there is reason to believe that the American players shown are Herb Hunter, Ty Cobb, Bob Shawkey and Fred "Bootnose" Hofman, who had all just ended their professional careers, and visited Japan to help coach the local Damai team and to help popularize baseball. It is unclear to the archivist why the film reels range in date from 1926 to 1934.
