Daybook, 1742-1839 Digital

Scope and Contents

This volume contains entries for four different businesses. Trenton Mills, November 1, 1742-April 6, 1744; I.P. & R.G. Hazard, October 18, 1825-November 28, 1828; R.G. Hazard & Co.-A, January 1829-January 19, 1839; and Peace Dale Store, September 27, 1836-March 23, 1839.

Entries of Trenton Mills, dated from 1742 to 1744, include an account of wheat brought to the mill, charges for grinding wheat and sales of bran, buckwheat, flour, corn, and beans, and orders placed and delivered by various individuals to Trenton merchant Andrew Reed. An entry on August 4, 1743, shows Tunis Quick carried unspecified cargo in three wagons to Reed. Other names in the volume include New Jersey Governor Lewis Morris (1671-1746), Bordentown Iron Works Company, Peter Huff, Josiah Appleton, Clatworthy Reed, Theophilus Phillips & Son, Pennsylvania Deputy Governor George Thomas, John Coxe, day laborer Henry Bellenjo, Mary Loveland, William Plaskitt, David Dunbar, William Bond, Margaret Clark, Cornelius Ringo, Sarah Milburne, William Benge, Jonathan Furman, John Osburn, Tunis Hoppah, and Preserve Brown. Entries for Lewis Morris, Jonathan Davis, and merchant William Allin, among others, note when products were conveyed through people they enslaved. On August 15, 1743, Allin was charged for delivery to “Palentine & Negro,” the former term possibly meaning a German Palatine emigrant.
