Subseries A. Daybooks, Journals, Ledgers, 1742-1918

Scope and Contents

This subseries contains records that represent the daily and monthly book keeping of the Peace Dale Manufacturing Company, 1742-1918, and its predecessors R.G. Hazard & Co. and I.P. & R.G. Hazard. Included are day books, journals and ledgers kept by the company treasurer. The records highlight financial transactions made between the company and its sales agents, wholesalers and customers including the amount of goods purchased and the price paid.

Also included here is material related to the Hazard family, but not directly involving their management. Volume 1, contains records relating to the Trenton Mills, a flour mill in Trenton, New Jersey owned by Joseph Peace, 1742-1744, Mary Peace's grandfather (Mary Peace was Rowland Hazard's wife). Volume 2 contains records relating to the estate of Joseph Peace, 1758-1785. Daybook volume 3 contains daily expense entries, 1761-1781 for a rice plantation on the Santee River near Charleston, South Carolina, owned by former merchant, Sampson Neyle.

Arrangement

Some volumes in this subseries contain multiple entries for different business entities. A scope note has been included to give exact dates and names of the different businesses. There are entries for both blotters and journals. These volumes are essentially the same type of accounting book.
