Series I. Peace Dale Manufacturing Company records, 1742-1922
Scope and Contents
This series contains the records of the Peace Dale Manufacturing Company and businesses owned and operated by Hazard family members and family business partners. Included are financial records, mill production and payroll records, and correspondence dating from 1742-1922. The records highlight the management and operation of a large textile manufacturing firm located in Peace Dale, Rhode Island during the 19th century.
The earliest material documents Rowland Hazard I (1763-1835) and his mercantile pursuits in Charleston, South Carolina with his cousin John Robinson, Jr. and business partner Peter Ayrault. The bound volumes highlight the day to day operations of Hazard, Robinson & Co. and Hazard and Ayrault, firms owned and operated by Hazard family members and their business associates. These bound volumes date from the mid 18th century to the early 19th century. The firms were in the merchant shipping and commission business and conducted trade in the West Indies. The later material in this series pertains to the textile firm R.G. Hazard & Co., later known as the Peace Dale Mfg. Co. This material dates from the early 19th century to the 20th century and details the Hazard family's ownership and management of the textile factory.
