[Letter from Eileen Southern to Mr. Rathindranth Chattopadhyay], November 29, 1984 Digital

Scope and Contents

Southern thanks Chattopadhyay for his praise of her book The Music of Black Americans : A History and congratulates him on his publication of a biography of Dr. Martin Luther King. Southern also writes of her research into the origins of "We Shall Overcome," which she traces to a hymn written in 1900 by Black gospel-hymn writer Charles A. Tindley entitled, "I'll Overcome Some Day." She also credits the spiritual "No More Auction Block for Me" as another influence on the songwriters of "We Shall Overcome."
