Framed letter dated July 6, 1737, from William Dudley to John Palmer, a member of the Society of the Second Precinct in Marblehead, Massachusetts, requesting the proprietors of the Second Church reconsider releasing Holyoke as pastor, following a vote of the Harvard College Board of Overseers that established a committee to pursue the appointment of Holyoke as College president.

William Dudley (1686-1743; Harvard AB 1704), son of Massachusetts Governor Joseph Dudley, served in the British army during Queen Anne’s War, and after the conflict ended, was a peace commissioner to the Abenaki, who had allied with France. In 1713 Dudley became a justice of the peace, and he served in the Massachusetts legislature from 1718 to 1729. He was also a member of the Harvard Board of Overseers.
