Biographical / Historical

Harvard Professor Stephen Sewall (1734-1804) earned a Harvard AB in 1761 and taught Oriental languages and Hebrew at Harvard from 1761 to 1785. After graduation, Sewall became an instructor of Hebrew at the College, and supplemented his income by serving as the College librarian and butler (who in addition to a salary received a percentage of the profits from Buttery sales). In 1764, Sewall was appointed the Hancock Professor of Hebrew and other Oriental Languages and held the position until 1785.
