Scope and Contents
Draft of a July 6, 1720 letter to Captain John Tallamy directing him to recover any debts "due to the sd Colledge, from any Person, in the Country of Boston & particularly on acct of a legacy or donation of John Doddridge."
The bottom of the letter is no longer extant. A note on the verso mentions an accompanying letter granting Tallamy power of attorney to recover Doddridge's legacy; that letter is no longer with the item. Related materials are pasted into the "Wills, gifts and grants" volume of this series (UAI 15.400 Box 4, Volume 1).

John Doddridge of Bremeridge, Devon, England was a British barrister of the Middle Temple. His 1658 will left "10£ to be forever issuing" to Harvard for "the maintenance of scholars." The College had a difficult time collecting the yearly gift after 1687, and worked unsuccessfully until 1785 to recover the money.
