Order authorizing the payment of £100 to Increase Mather for his service as Harvard president. On the back of the document is Mather's receipt of the payment from John Phillips, treasurer of the Province.

Historical note

Sir William Phips (February 2, 1650/1-February 18, 1694/5) was the first governor of the Province of Massachusetts Bay, serving from May 16, 1692 to November 17, 1694.

Donated by Henry R. Dalton, Elizabeth L. Dalton, Philip S. Dalton, Mrs. Frederic M. Stone (formerly Susan D. Dalton) and Ellen B. Dalton on February 3, 1921. A January 28, 1921 letter of donation from Henry R. Dalton to Harvard librarian William Coolidge Lane, along with biographical information on Phips, Mather, and Phillips, is held in the control file for this collection in the Harvard University Archives.
