Scope and content

The folder contains subscription lists and letters (addressed to Increase Newell, a member of the Courts of Assistants) regarding voluntary contributions to the College from inhabitants of the towns of Andover, Cambridge, Concord, Dorchester, Haverhill, Hingham, Medfield, Reading, Salem, Topsfield, Watertown, Wenham, and Woburn, Massachusetts, and York, Maine. The folder also contains an account of commencements and tuitions.

Historical note

On October 19, 1652, the General Court ordered the inhabitants of towns within the colony to solicit subscriptions for the aid of the College.

Arrangement

The documents are arranged in alphabetical order by town name.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

The subscription paper from the inhabitants of Concord, dated August 22, 1653, was donated by Percy S. Straus on December 17, 1920. Documentation of the donation and provenance of this document is held in the control file for this collection in the Harvard University Archives.

The subscription paper from the inhabitants of Watertown was donated by Percy S. Grant on March 3, 1910. A March 3, 1910 letter of donation from Grant to Harvard librarian William Coolidge Lane is held in the control file for this collection in the Harvard University Archives.

The remaining subscription papers were donated by Suzanna and Theodora Willard in 1910.
