General note

The Compositions series contains poems, essays, book reviews, fiction, drawings, and other works created by authors other than James Laughlin. Compositions are arranged alphabetically by the name of the author, with translations listed under the name of the original author of the work. The majority of the items in this series have been transferred here from the Correspondence series and Subject and title files series.

Most of these pieces were not published by New Directions. However, Laughlin often compiled material for proposed New Directions books, and these compilations are included in this series. There are also individual poems, essays, and other works collected by Laughlin in his files that are versions of those published in New Directions books. Manuscripts and proofs of New Directions publications are in bMs AM 2077.1. Compositions by James Laughlin can be found in bMS AM 2077.2.
