Scope and Contents
Two page letter from John Warren (1753-1815) to Secretary of War William Eustis (1753-1825) regarding an opening at the Navy's Boston Marine Hospital. Warren remarks that he hopes that the new appointee would employ favorable teaching conditions for the faculty and students of the Harvard Medical School, Boston, Massachusetts and writes to support his son, John Collins Warren (1778-1856), as a possible candidate.

John Warren (1753-1815), A.B., 1771, Harvard College, Cambridge, Massachusetts, and Hon. M.D., 1786, Harvard, studied medicine with his brother Joseph Warren (1741-1775) and with Edward Augustus Holyoke (1728-1829) in Salem, Massachusetts. He then served as medical surgeon during the Revolutionary War. He was appointed Professor of Anatomy and Surgery from 1782 to 1791 and Hersey Professor of Anatomy and Surgery from 1791 to 1815 at Harvard Medical School, Boston, Massachusetts and through his career was associated with the school and with Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston, Massachusetts. Warren had a large private practice and was at his death recognized as the leading surgeon in the Boston area. He was one of the founders of the Massachusetts Medical Society and belonged to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the Humane Society of Massachusetts (established 1785).
