Scope and Contents

Consists of booklets, pamphlets, papers, and other publications related to nutrition and public health, published by various professional organizations, government agencies, and educational institutions. Some publications were authored or co-authored by Fredrick J. Stare. The bulk of the series consists of booklets and occasional newsletters published by the American Council on Science and Health, for which Stare was a co-founder and Chair of the Board of Directors. The series also includes literature published by: the American Dietetic Association; the American Medical Association Council on Foods; the Coca-Cola Company; the European Commission; the General Foods Corporation; the H.J. Heinz Company; Harvard Medical School; Harvard School of Public Health; the Lown Cardiovascular Research Foundation; the Massachusetts Department of Public Health; the National Academy of Sciences; the Nutrition Foundation; Sears, Roebuck and Co.; the United Fruit Company; the United States Departments of Agriculture and Home Economics; the Upjohn Company; and the World Health Organization. Topics covered in the series include: nutrition and diet recommendations; food composition; nutritive values; daily dietary allowances; vegetarianism; food irradiation; foodborne illness; endocrine disruptors; fat; dairy; vitamins and minerals; alcohol use; tobacco use; fluoride; exercise; pharmaceuticals; lead poisoning; environmental chemicals; cancer; animal experimentation; women’s lifestyle recommendations; histories of various corporations and organizations; and Fredrick J. Stare’s career.

Access to Harvard University records is restricted for 50 years from the date of creation. These restrictions are noted where they appear in Series I, II, and IV. Access to patient, health, personnel, student, and personal information is restricted for 80 years from the date of creation. These restrictions appear in Series I, II, IV, V, VI, and VIII. Researchers may apply for access to restricted records. Consult Public Services for further information.

Access to digital files in this collection (as found in Series II) is also subject to the above restrictions. Additionally, access is premised on the availability of a computer station, requisite software, and/or the ability of Public Services staff to review and/or print out records of interest in advance of an on-site visit.

Audio and audio-visual recordings are restricted to access until such time as they can be converted to digital media. Recordings may also be subject to the above restrictions; once converted, recordings will be restricted based on the recording's title, or as per the restrictions for the folder from which the recording was removed.
