Series IX. Collected Publications, 1939-1999

Scope and Contents

Consists of scientific paper reprints and grey literature collected and maintained by Fredrick J. Stare, related his research and professional interests. Occasional publications were authored or co-authored by Stare, but were maintained with collected publications. Scientific paper reprints are accompanied by occasional newspaper clippings and professional organization newsletters, and concern various topics in nutrition and public health. The bulk of the papers are numbered by an unidentified scheme, between 3367 and 4506. Grey literature includes booklets and pamphlets related to nutrition, wellbeing, and public health. The bulk of the grey literature was published by the American Council on Science and Health, for which Stare was a co-founder and Chair of the Board of Directors. Other publishers include: food corporations and interest groups; state and national government agencies related to food and nutrition; professional organizations; and educational institutions. Topics in the series include: nutrition and diet recommendations; eating behavior; nutrition and diet in various populations; fad diets and nutrition quackery; food-related disease and illness; heart and cardiovascular health; weight and weight loss; food additives and fortification; dietary supplements; food groups; various food components; fluoride; exercise; alcohol use; tobacco use; nutrition education; and histories of various corporations, among other topics. The series also includes occasional: newspaper clippings; professional organization newsletters; and a card catalog maintained by Stare and Virginia Aronson.

Papers are predominantly in English. Some papers are in French, Italian, Japanese, Spanish, and Thai.

Collection is open for research. Some restrictions apply (see below).

Access to Harvard University records is restricted for 50 years from the date of creation. These restrictions are noted where they appear in Series I, II, and IV. Access to patient, health, personnel, student, and personal information is restricted for 80 years from the date of creation. These restrictions appear in Series I, II, IV, V, VI, and VIII. Access to digital files in this collection (as found in Series II) is also subject to the above restrictions. Additionally, access is premised on the availability of a computer station, requisite software, and/or the ability of Public Services staff to review and/or print out records of interest in advance of an on-site visit.

Audio and audio-visual recordings are restricted to access until such time as they can be converted to digital media. Recordings may also be subject to the above restrictions; once converted, recordings will be restricted based on the recording's title, or as per the restrictions for the folder from which the recording was removed.

Series IX will be arranged in two subseries: A. Collected Reprints, Clippings, and Card Catalog, 1947-1999; and B. Grey Literature, 1939-1999.
