Patient case histories, 1784-1786., 1784-1786. Digital

Scope and Contents

Notebook containing records of patient symptoms, Hastings' diagnoses, and the course of treatment he prescribed. For a man who developed pleurisy, Hastings' treatment included "Bleeding [and] the common evacuations," and tepid bathing of the lower extremities. In the case of a woman who presented with colic pains and hysterical fits, one course of treatment undertaken was to shave the top of her head and apply wormwood directly to the scalp. In the case of a young girl diagnosed with hydrocephalus, Hastings recorded her pulse as he monitored her condition. The symptoms were headache, sores, fever, distorted vision, and paralysis. The notebook also includes recipes for conditions like feverish paroxysms and digestive issues.
