Scope and Contents

Consists of fifteen commonplace books kept by Seth Hastings, patient case histories from Hastings' medical practice, and the charter for the Woodbury Medical Society (Woodbury, Connecticut). Commonplace books mainly contain transcriptions from medical textbooks and writings by physicians, including Hermann Boerhaave, Robert Whytt, John Allen, and William Cullen, and recipes and instructions for delivering medicine and medical care. Several notebooks contain information on women's health, menstruation, and childbirth, and associated diseases and conditions. Hastings' notebooks occasionally include entries unrelated to medicine, including his undated account of the American Revolution. There is also information regarding the family farm in Clinton, New York.
