Leona Baumgartner was the first women to be Commissioner of the New York City Department of Health, and was an advocate of family planning and women’s and children’s health. A.B. University of Kansas, 1923, M.A. University of Kansas, 1925. Ph.D. Yale University, 1932. M.D. Yale University, 1934. Joined the New York City Department of Public Health in 1937 and was Commissioner, 1954-1962. Visiting Professor of Social Medicine, Harvard, 1966-1972.
