These records come from the American Can Company's (ACC) Corporate Communications Office and span the years 1901-1986. The collection includes material from ACC as well as from its subsidiaries. Most notably, there is material from the Marathon Corporation which was acquired by ACC in 1957 and from Menasha Printing and Carton Company which was acquired by Marathon in 1927. There is some material from the Northern Paper Company acquired by Marathon in 1953, Dixie Cup, acquired by ACC in 1957 and a small amount from Butterick acquired by ACC in 1968. The collection consists primarily of publicity material such as photographs, posters and house organs. Also included are sales records such as sales representatives' handbooks, catalogs, and price lists, subject files which appear to have been used for reference by ACC's Corporate Communications Office, and clippings concerning ACC's history, including Marathon Corporation of Canada, antitrust, management, and "Americology."

Biographical / Historical

The American Can Company (ACC) was incorporated in 1901 and was a leader in the canmaking industry and dominated the market for decades. It was headquartered in Manhattan, New York City until 1970 when it relocated to Greenwich, Connecticut. It had numerous facilities all across the United States and Canada and acquired several organizations including Marathon Corporation in 1957, Dixie Cup in 1957, and Butterick in 1968. In the 1980s ACC ended its operations.
