The records of Honorable William Jackson contain papers regarding the Boston & Worcester Railroad and the Western Railroad and Millbury Branch Railroad divisions of the Boston & Albany Railroad, with semi-annual accounts of superintendents.

Biographical / Historical

William Jackson was a white male politician born in Newton, Massachusetts on Septemeber 2, 1783. Jackson served on the Newton board of selectmen, the Newton school committee, the Massachusetts State House of Representatives (1829-1832) and two terms in the United States Congress (1833-1837) as a member of the Anti-Masonic Party. Additionally he was founder of the Newton Temperance Society, secretary of the Newton Female Academy in 1831, presdident of the Newton Savings Bank (1831-1835 and 1848-1855), a founder of the Liberty Party in 1846, president of the American Missionary Society (1846-1855), and a publisher of a newspaper. He had a great interest in railroads and supported the creation of regular railway service between Boston and Newton in 1844. He would eventually be involved in seven railway companies. Jackson died February 27, 1855 in Newton.
