Correspondence regarding shipment of tobacco and letters to William Tudor, Sr., 1779-1806 Digital

Scope and Contents

Contains financial records and letters to William Tudor, Sr., related to tobacco shipment, confiscation of property from Loyalists during the Revolutionary War, and other business and legal matters, dated 1779-1806. Included are receipts for tobacco shipped from North Carolina on the brig General Washington and consigned to merchants Gourland & Moland; and letters from John Moylan (1745-1799) to Tudor and Captain John Young regarding their business relationship and later his financial difficulties. Moylan writes to Young from the Continental Army encampment at Morristown, New Jersey, in 1780, about his appointment as assistant clothier general to the Army, and his expectation that the position, which acquainted him with George Washington, would help him establish useful connections. He further discusses moving his quarters to Maryland "where I hope opportunity may frequently occur to our mutual advantage." There are also letters to Tudor from Joseph Donnell in Great Britain regarding American policies towards absentees after the Revolutionary War; disposal of his property in Boston and Tudor's management of Donnell's affairs in America; Donnell's ordination as a clergyman in Dublin; and his estrangement from his brother George. A letter to Delia Jarvis Tudor references her suggestion Donnell apply for a position at an Episcopal congregation in Boston and her visit tohim when he was imprisoned during the war. A letter to Tudor from William Pepperell also discusses confiscated property and his debts in America.
