Subseries IF. Photographs and paintings, circa 1852-2003

Scope and Contents

This subseries contains photograph albums, studio portrait photographs, ambrotypes, carte-de-visite and paintings depicting George F. Baker, Sr. The bulk of the photographs depict solely Baker with a small selection also including family members or professional colleagues. There are three carte-de-visite photographs of a middle aged George F. Baker between ages 35 and 50, circa 1875-1890 and one photograph of Baker, Sr. on horseback at his Monmouth Beach, New Jersey vacation home, circa 1890. The majority of the portrait photographs were taken of Baker Sr. between circa 1880 and 1930. The bulk of these portrait photographs are black and white studio portraits taken near Baker Sr.'s seventy-fifth birthday in 1915 at the photographic studios of Underwood & Underwood and Pach Brothers, both of New York City. Also included are two photographs, taken in 1926, of the US Steel Corporation board members and finance committee; photographs taken of the Monmouth Beach house in 1915 and 2003; two photographs of Baker, Sr. and others riding the Central Railroad of New Jersey, circa 1883; and a group of eight photographs taken of Baker, Sr., his family and Theodore Newton Vail, circa 1918. There is one photograph of the First National Bank of New York building taken in August 1929. Two pencil sketches done by painter William Orpen as study for a late portrait painting, circa 1930.

There are three cased ambrotype photographs and one cased tintype of George F. Baker Sr. The images were taken when he was 12, approximately 15, and 19 years old. The ambrotype taken in 1859 was just after Baker was involved in a railroad accident while traveling home from visiting his uncle Fisher Ames Baker at Dartmouth College.

The photograph albums are described separately.
