Series II. Subject Files, 1960-2016
Scope and Contents
The Subject Files are the bulk of George Cabot Lodge's papers and reflect the topics of his research, teaching, writing and professional correspondence over nearly five decades. George Cabot Lodge's filing instructions to his assistants show that he categorized most of these records, from an unpublished letter to the editor to an internal HBS memo, as “Writings.” The series contains correspondence; clippings of articles written by or about George Cabot Lodge; memos on his research; letters to the editor; op-ed articles; research notes; course materials and lectures; HBS Cases and Teaching Notes that George Cabot Lodge wrote or supervised; annotated drafts; charts and diagrams (George Cabot Lodge labeled them "pictures"); and speeches and talks to non-HBS groups. The order is primarily chronological although items out of date order appear to be related to the subject of the adjacent, older record. Often only subsequent revisions of Cases and Teaching Notes, not originals, are found filed in the year they were first published. Annual Comments files contain private and published feedback or coverage, related to George Cabot Lodge's writings, often sent by his publishers or HU press officers. Annual Correspondence and Notes files contain research and drafts for Cases and Teaching Notes. Thank you notes, George Cabot Lodge's and others, are found throughout his correspondence files. Additional subject files were found within Lodge's electronic files. If the electronic document does not have a paper counterpart, the original file name is noted. Correspondence will also be found in Series I: Correspondence.

Arrangement
Reflecting the original order, this series is primarily chronological, but then divided into subseries by decade. The sequence of folders for each year was often 1. Correspondence, 2. Comments, 3. Research, 4. Book reviews, 5. Letters to the Editor, 6. Op-Eds, 7. Correspondence and notes, 8. other folders by arranged by month. This initial order was made consistent for most years although there remains a lot of variation year to year. Folder titles often reflect the single item or publication contained within. Date ranges or exact dates were added to many folder titles. Names of other authors are indicated in many case. Folders with draft book chapters and other drafts are also indicated. Original document paste-ups and first copies were retained along with up to three duplicate copies, if found.
