Scope and Contents

Daybook of John Heard, dated 1796-1809, containing of sales of rum, corn, sugar, snakeroot, aniseed, and other merchandise; lumber purchases; labor costs; loans by Heard; charges to the distillery for molasses imported on the sloop Fox and bought of other merchants; and entries related to shipping and supplying vessels such as the schooners Hope, Polley, Sally, and Susannah. Names in the volume include Comeno Morris, Francis Caldwell, Thomas Appleton, Joseph Killburn, Nathaniel Heard, Edward Stacy, William Dodge, Anna Marshall, Betsey Gray, Anna Dodge, Jabish Treadwell, Jonathan Ingersoll, Daniel Bordman, Major Joseph Swasey, Reverend Joseph Dana, Moses Pinder, Samuel Kinsman, Ebenezer Staniford, and William Dennis. There are also entries of rum and other provisions to the highway and dike, likely supplied to workers hired by the town of Ipswich.
