Scope and Contents

Daybook of sales of rum, molasses, coffee, wood, tea, indigo, dry goods, salt, fish, and farm produce, by John Heard in 1780-1784, sometimes paid in barter of labor or service, as well as entries related to investing in and outfitting privateers. Names in the volume include William Story, Stephen Dutch, William Wise, Lucy Hodgkins, Jacob Treadwell, Henry Spiller, John Kinsman, Philip Homan, Andrew Burley, Caty Walley, John Safford, Asa Peabody, Anna Dodge, and Comeno Morris. Also contains entries for payment to Continental Army soldier Epes Jewett, charges to the Town of Ipswich, and cash orders and loans, as well as records of clove water and other merchandise shipped to Virginia in 1782 and rum sent out of the state in 1794. The last page contains a memorandum of the value of Continental dollars in 1777-1780.
