Scope and Contents
Contains papers related to John Heard's service on town committees and other Ipswich town affairs, dated 1783-1803. Includes bills to the town for labor and service of committee members, the town clerk, and others; memoranda of property rights granted; and a list of retailers including Daniel Noyes, Anna Dodge, Anna Marshall, Jonathan Cogswell, Margaret Wise, Nathaniel Heard, Daniel Rogers, and innkeepers, including Jacob Treadwell, Jeremiah Choate, and Richard Homans, in Ipswich in 1789. Homans came to ownership of a tavern through his marriage to Susanna How in 1776; the establishment was opened in 1724 by her father Increase How, and after he died in 1754, Susanna assumed management. In the fall of 1789, President George Washington dined there.
