Christiane L. Joost-Gaugier is an internationally known historian of Renaissance Art and Architecture. She earned her AB, AM, and Ph.D. degrees from Harvard University and in 2005 was awarded an Honorary Phi Beta Kappa from Harvard University for Lifetime Achievement.

Joost-Gaugier's scholarship in the history of art and the history of ideas has been published extensively in international scholarly journals, proceedings of learned societies, encyclopedias, and museum catalogues. Among her publications are over 200 research articles in The Art Bulletin, Gazette des Beaux Arts, Zeitscrift für Kunstgeschichte, Artibus et Historiae, the Renaissance Quarterly, Acta Historiae Artium, Arte Lombarda, Arte Veneta, Studi Veneziani, Paragone, Sixteenth Century Journal, Storia dell'Arte, and other periodicals.

Among the books Joost-Gaugier has authored are the following: Selected Drawings of Jacopo Bellini, (New York and Toronto, 1982); Raphael's Stanza della Segnatura: Meaning and Invention, (Cambridge and New York, 2002); Measuring Heaven: Pythagoras and his Influence on Thought and Art in Antiquity and the Middle Ages, (Ithaca and London, 2006); Pitagora e il suo Influsso sul Pensiero e sull'Arte , (Rome, 2008); Pythagoras and Renaissance Europe: Finding Heaven, (Cambridge and New York); and Italian Renaissance Art: Understanding its Meaning , (London and New York, 2013); Islamic Elements in the Architecture of Puglia (Tournhout and Amsterdam, 2019), and the upcoming Wine, The Elixir of Civilization: An Introduction to the Ancient Literature of Wine.

Joost-Gaugier has been invited to present her research in numerous venues, including the University of California, Berkeley; the University of Toronto; the Johns Hopkins University; Princeton University; the University of Padova; and the University of Milano.

Her research publications have centered on Italian art, architecture, and intellectual history. They have spanned the fields of the ancient, medieval, and Renaissance worlds and have involved work in Venice, Padua, Rome, Florence, Lombardy, Tuscany, Calabria, Puglia and, most recently, the Middle East.

A tenured full professor and former Department Chair in three universities, Joost-Gaugier is currently a Visiting Scholar at George Washington University. She has received many awards and honors, including a Fulbright Fellowship, several grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities, several from the Kress Foundation, and three grants from the American Philosophical Society, as well as grants from the American Council of Learned Societies, the American Association of University Women, and the Delmas Foundation.

In the early 1970s, Professor Joost-Gaugier was the first woman to file a class action on behalf of women faculty members with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC). The EEOC then sued Tufts University in federal court, in a precedent-setting case and extended trial that were not resolved until the mid-1980s when awards, which included a non-disclosure clause, were made to all female professors who had been at Tufts at the time.
