1 foldersThis collection consists mainly of correspondence. There are 28 letters (20 autograph letters, signed, 2 letters, signed, 6 typed letters, signed) from Susan B. Anthony to 27 different people about a variety of subjects, including temperance, woman's rights, and the History of Woman Suffrage. There are also two autograph notes, signed, one telegram and one autograph letter, signed (1899) to Susan B. Anthony, all concerning the International Council of Women.
The collection also contains receipts, newsclippings, a Susan B. Anthony memorial pamphlet, a photograph of Janie H. Spafford, and "The Anthony Home Calendar." Both the calendar and the photograph have been microfilmed with the Library's photograph collection; the film is available at the Schlesinger Library. The Calendar duplicates one in the Susan B. Anthony papers (see A-143, #31) and can be found elsewhere on these reels.
BIOGRAPHY
Best known for her lifelong crusade for woman’s suffrage, Anthony was first active in the temperance and anti-slavery movements. In May 1869 she organized the National Woman Suffrage Association, with Elizabeth Cady Stanton as president. From 1891 to 1900, she was the second president of the National American Woman Suffrage Association. For further information, see Notable American Women (1971).

These papers of Susan B. Anthony were purchased by the Schlesinger Library from Paul C. Richards, Goodspeed's Bookshop, Univ. Autographs and Walter Benjamin Autographs in 1963-1968 and 1970, in part through the Margaret Earhart Smith Fund.
