Papers of Shizuko Iwazawa, 1945-1966

The papers of Shizuko Iwazawa include an autograph album Iwazawa compiled while incarcerated at the Crystal City Internment Camp, a World War II concentration camp for Japanese Americans near Crystal City, Texas. Entries in the album are written in English, Japanese, and Spanish, and one entry includes a drawing of the camp with the title "Alien Internment Camp, Crystal City, Texas, Nov. 20th 1945." Other materials in the collection document Iwazawa's life in the two decades following the end of the war and include correspondence, including birth announcements for several of Iwazawa's nieces and nephews; a date book; an address and note book; an identification card and service certificate documenting her employment at The Pacific Telephone and Telegraph Company; and photographs, many of which document trips to Japan to visit family. Most of the photographs in this collection are or will be digitized and available online. Folders are arranged alphabetically.

BIOGRAPHY

Shizuko Iwazawa, daughter of Masaichi and Kiyo Iwazawa, was born August 3, 1929, in Hiroshima, Japan. She immigrated to the United States with her family in December 1929, settling in Hanford, and later Delano, California. In May 1942, Iwazawa, known as Sally, and her family were incarcerated at the Poston Relocation Center, a World War II concentration camp for Japanese Americans. In May 1943, they were transferred to Crystal City Internment Camp near Crystal City, Texas. Following the war, Iwazawa worked for The Pacific Telephone and Telegraph Company. In 1971, she married Akira Matsubara.
