Includes re: when she was in third grade both she and her brother said they wanted to be scientists, response was "Fine, Jonathan can go to med school and be a doctor, and you can be a nurse," and when she protested being told she could be a lab technician; happy childhood as tomboy; going to Syracuse University on scholarship and finding many students there not serious and having trouble getting them involved in social/political issues; transferring to University of Chicago for senior year and meeting future husband there; developing definite interest in biology and genetics; professors showing her the joy and importance of scientific discovery; getting job after master's degree; marrying and having children; staying home with children and being involved in community affairs; working part time in husband's lab at Harvard, essentially running the lab; husband had been her professor so she accepted the hierarchy of his being in charge in lab but he had a lot of respect for her and his students; awareness that she was professor's wife and had little sense of professional security; husband's death; being appointed research associate; husband not having wanted to push her status for fear of being suspected of nepotism; becoming lecturer at Harvard; going into graduate program for doctorate at Harvard.
