Includes conclusion of T-462.30: Nancy Hopkins re: changing place of women in science; Spanier re: men and women's different opinions of Barbara McClintock; Spanier on physiological effects of poverty and racism; Lowe interview: Spanier's ideas for book; Lowe describing her identical twin sister as a "defrocked chemist;" started research in chemistry again (after doing none for some time) about 5 years before interview; considering feminist work more important than scientific work; difficulties of being a feminist and a scientist functioning in scientific community; directorship of women's studies program and lack of institutional support; need for nurturing environment and for support outside of scientific community; she and her sister first to get PhD in their town; grandmother determined that her granddaughters would go to college; family was very poor but she did not really know if at the time (plenty to eat, due to hunting and garden, noticed poverty mainly due to clothes); treated as "both boys and girls" by parents (father insisted they be "proper girls" but also took them hunting and fishing); determined not to go into women's field; married when a sophomore and did all cooking and cleaning as well as working ca.20 hours a week; marriage not a success; isolation teaching at Bryn Mawr College (students not wanting women professors); determining research was the way to go; re: Cell 16 (radical women's group) in Boston area.
