Emma Willard (1787-1870) - educator. Before she founded her famous Troy Female Seminary, New York, in 1821, she had founded a girls boarding school (1814) in Middlebury and a girls' school (1819) in Waterford, New York. She conducted the Troy Female Seminary until 1838. After that she spent much time traveling and addressing groups in favor of higher education for women.
