Biographical / Historical

Carl M. Sapers, lawyer and educator, was born in 1932 in Boston, Massachusetts. He attended Harvard College (AB 1953) and Harvard Law School (JD 1958). During his career as a lawyer, he represented multiple architects and architectural firms, and was counsel for the Boston Society of Architects, the Massachusetts State Association of Architects, the American Institute of Architects (AIA), and the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB). He was partner and then managing partner at the Boston-based law firm, Hill and Barlow, where he worked for 45 years until his retirement in 2002.

Sapers taught courses at MIT and at the Harvard University Graduate School of Design (GSD). At Harvard, he served as Adjunct Professor of Legal Practice (1984-1993) and then as Adjunct Professor of Studies in Professional Practice in Architecture (1993-2009). He retired from the GSD in 2010.

Sapers died July 18, 2018.
