The Doris Cole and Harold Goyette collection documents the personal lives and careers of Doris Cole, FAIA, AB '59, MArch '63 and Harold Goyette, AIA, AICP, March '54, and the work of their firm, Cole and Goyette, Architects and Planners, Inc. of Cambridge, MA. In addition to the work of the firm, the collection documents Goyette's career as the first Director of Planning at Harvard University and Cole's career as an author of five books on architecture, including From Tipi to Skyscraper: A History of Women in Architecture (Boston: i press, 1973), which was the first book published on women in architecture in the United States.

Material in the collection includes architectural drawings, correspondence, diaries, photographs and slides, and publications and clippings. Material in the collection dates from 1927 to 2022.

At request of the donor, Subseries A04 is closed to research until five years after the death of Doris Cole.

Throughout the collection, digital media on CDs, DVDs, and a USB is closed as the files have yet to be processed.

The Doris Cole and Harold Goyette collection documents the personal lives and careers of Doris Cole, FAIA, AB '59, MArch '63 and Harold Goyette, AIA, AICP, March '54, and the work of their firm, Cole and Goyette, Architects and Planners, Inc. of Cambridge, MA. Cole's records document her childhood and education, early architectural career, and research and writing for her five books on architecture and architectural history. Goyette's records document his career as the first Director of the Planning Office, as well as his education, sailing, and travels with Cole.

The records of the Cole and Goyette firm include project files and drawings, reports, administrative and publicity records, visual files, and presentation boards.

Material in the collection includes architectural drawings, correspondence, diaries, photographs and slides, and publications and clippings. Material in the collection dates from 1927 to 2022.

Biographical / Historical

Doris Cole, FAIA, architect and author, was born May 9, 1938 in Chicago, Illinois to Louis and Helen Cole. She spent her early life in Chicago, Grand Rapids, Michigan, and East Grand Rapids, graduating from East Grand Rapids High School in 1955. Cole studied Architectural Sciences at Radcliffe College and received her AB cum laude in 1959 before enrolling at the Harvard University Graduate School of Design and earning her Master of Architecture in 1963.

After completing her studies, Cole worked in France and travelled internationally before returning to Massachusetts and working at several architectural firms throughout the 1960s and 1970s, including J. Timothy Anderson and Associates; Drummey Rosane Anderson (DRA); and Earl Flansburgh and Associates. Cole married architect Sergio Berizzi in 1970 and the two remained married until his death in 1976. From 1973-1981 Cole worked as Staff Architect at the MIT Programming and Design Review Planning Office and MIT Physical Plant office.

In addition to architectural work, Cole authored five books on architecture and architectural history. Her first book, From Tipi to Skyscraper: A History of Women in Architecture (Boston: i press, 1973) was the first book published on women in architecture in the United States. Cole’s other books are Eleanor Raymond, Architect (New Jersey: Associated University Presses, 1981); The Lady Architects: Lois Lilley Howe, Eleanor Manning, and Mary Almy 1893-1937, written with Karen Cord Taylor (New York: Midmarch Art Press, 1990); School Treasures: Architecture of Historic Boston Schools, with Nick Wheeler, photographer (Weston, MA: Font & Center Press, 2002); and Candid Reflections: Letters from Women in Architecture 1979 & 2004 (New York: Midmarch Art Press, 2007).

In 1979 Cole married architect Harold “Hal” Goyette, and in 1971 they founded Cole and Goyette, Architects and Planners, Inc. in Cambridge, Massachusetts, which operated until 2008 and formally closed in 2012. The firm specialized in residential, educational, and commercial buildings for private and public clients. Most of their projects were completed in Massachusetts, particularly in Cambridge, and the City of Boston and the surrounding areas. Prominent projects include the renovation of historic school buildings in Boston, Quincy, and Watertown, Massachusetts.

In 2012 Cole established her new practice, Doris Cole, FAIA, Architecture/Planning in Cambridge, MA.

Harold “Hal” Goyette, AIA, AICP, architect and planner, was born November 30, 1927 to Elmer and Pearl (Batiste) Goyette in Mobile, Alabama. He was raised in Mobile and Irvington, Alabama and graduated from Murphy High School in 1945. Goyette attended Auburn University School of Architecture and Fine Arts and graduated with his Bachelor of Architecture degree in 1950. While at Auburn University, Goyette was a member of the Naval ROTC program, became a commissioned officer, and served during the Korean War. Goyette earned his Master of Architecture degree from the Harvard University Graduate School of Design in 1954 and then continued with Independent Study in City and Regional Planning at Harvard.

Goyette was the first Director of the Planning Office at Harvard University, a position he held from 1957-1981. In this position Goyette created and directed the first Long Range and Comprehensive Planning Program for Harvard University. From 1960 to 1970 Goyette was a partner at Chapman and Goyette, Architects and Planners. From 1974 to 1978 Goyette was Director of the RSKU/ ERTI Harvard University Planning Task Force. Goyette was a founding director and president of the Society for College and University Planning (SCUP) and received the Distinguished Service Award from SCUP in 2015. In 2016 Goyette received the Distinguished Alumni Award from Auburn University, College of Architecture, Design and Construction.

Goyette died on April 10, 2020 at the age of 92.
