Extent

8 linear feet (8 boxes)

Martha Minow's collection of research materials supporting her work on, In Brown's Wake: Legacies of America's Educational Landmark mainly consists of articles from a variety of sources. Most of the articles were published in law journals, but several others were printed in popular newspapers and magazines such as The New York Times and The Economist. The collection also contains some memos and emails to Minow from research assistants and colleagues in the field. Most of the articles are not annotated, though, on occasion, Minow's typed notes are mixed in with the articles. While the bulk of the collected works were published 1990-2006, some of them date back to the 1960s.

Minow originally arranged her research materials by topic in discrete file boxes, and the series titles for this collection represent her original categories. Each series is divided into two subseries: cited materials and uncited materials. The cited materials are arranged by chapter, and each cited work is listed, with brief bibliographic information, in the container list below. Uncited materials are not described in the container list, but a more detailed list is available to researchers by consulting with Historical & Special Collections staff.

Historical/Biographical Information

Martha Minow has been a member of the Harvard Law School faculty since 1981, when she was hired as an assistant professor, and becoming a full professor in 1986. In 2009, Minow was appointed Dean of the Faculty of Law at Harvard University. As a professor, Minow taught a variety of courses including civil procedure, constitutional law, family law, international criminal justice, jurisprudence, law and education, nonprofit organizations, and the public law workshop.

In addition to her academic commitments, Minow has served on several national and international committees, including the Independent International Commission on Kosovo, which launched Imagine Coexistence, a program of the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees. Additionally, she is involved with the Divided Cities initiative that is building an alliance of global cities dealing with ethnic, religious, or political divisions.

Minow is also a prolific writer and editor with over 15 titles to her name. These titles include Family Matters: Readings in Family Lives and the Law, Women and the Law, Breaking the Cycles of Hatred: Memory, Law and Repair, and Just Schools: Pursuing Equality in Societies of Difference.

Minow completed her undergraduate degree at the University of Michigan before earning a master's degree in education from the Harvard School of Education.
