Series Note

Sheldon Glueck's general correspondence files are of predominantly professional nature. Correspondents were colleagues, students and alumni; American and foreign scholars; representatives of the bench and the bar; professional organizations and societies in whose work SG took an active part or showed a keen interest; international, national, state and local agencies and institutions involved in the field of crime and correction. There is a substantial amount of correspondence concerning SG's varicus publications; also personal correspondence such as requests, fan mail, and invitations of various types, especially to speak or to contribute articles. Correspondence includes letters received and carbons of letters sent; tables and charts; enclosures such as memoranda, reports, minutes of meetings, typed manuscripts of persons other than SG, printed items such as programs, publishers announcements, clippings, and pamphlet material relevant to subjects discussed by correspondents.

Correspondence was kept by SG in two distinct filing arrangements, and this arrangement has been preserved. The first group, (a), consists of miscellaneous correspondence through 1940. The second group, (b), includes major correspondence, and miscellaneous correspondence for the years 1941 to 1971. The major correspondence covers roughly the years 1941 to 1971 also, although a few of these exchanges commence before 1941, and a very small number, notably those of Louis Dembitz Brandeis and Benjamin Nathan Cardozo, end before 1941. SG's current correspondence, beginning with 1972 and the time of his wife's death, will be included in SERIES XV: ADDENDA.
