Overview

The Harvard University News Office was established in 1919. The first photographer was hired in 1943. The Harvard University Gazette is the University's own weekly newspaper published by the University's own news agency for the Harvard community. This group of photographs are chiefly black-and-white enlargements of pictures taken for the Gazette, including photographs taken for possible use but not published. Includes portraits of University employees, faculty, students and alumni, photographs of the University campus and events such as athletics, student activities, lecture series, exhibitions, concerts, commencements, and alumni reunions.

Photographs taken for the Harvard University Gazette issues of May 23, 1986-August 9, 1991 including photographs taken for possible use but not published. Photographs depict University employees, faculty, students and alumni, events such as athletic competitions, student activities, lecture series, exhibitions, concerts, commencements, and reunions. The photographs are chiefly black-and-white enlargements. There is also one box of negatives. All dates given are for the issue date of the Gazette. Photographs may have specific dates in the title that are the date of the event or the date the photograph was taken. There are no enlargements for Gazette issues of February 13, 1987 and May 13, 1988.

Historical note

The Harvard University News Office was established in 1919. The first photographer was hired in 1943. During the early 1970s, the News Office was placed administratively under the Office of the Vice President for Government, Community and Public Affairs. In 1994-1995, the name of the office was changed to Harvard University Office of News and Public Affairs and later was renamed Public Affairs and Communications.

The Harvard University Gazette is the University's own weekly newspaper published by the University's own news agency for the Harvard community.
