Biographical materials, 1897-circa 1918

Scope and Content

The materials in this series including grammar and secondary school report cards and photographs provide a glimpse into Alton Miller's early academic accomplishments and family life. The report cards include Miller's grades for such subjects as spelling, reading, writing and drawing, geography, language and grammar, history,Latin,Greek,French,English, geometry, algebra, and physics from the Foster Grammar School and Somerville Latin High School from 1897 to 1906. All the report cards are signed by either Miller's mother or father and indicate his promotion to the next grade. The Foster Grammar School report cards are also signed by Miller's teacher and principal. This series also includes seven photographs from 1907 to 1916 that capture Miller with his academic regalia outside his family home in Somerville, Massachusetts (1916); wearing coveralls painting at Meadowbrook Farm in Guilford, New Hampshire (1908); and riding a buggy near Lake Winnipesaukee, New Hampshire (1907). Other photographs show Alton Miller with family members Carl Miller (brother), Charles N. Miller (father), Lula Lombard Miller (mother), Mary Evangeline Mason (wife), and Eva Miller (adopted daughter of his mother and father). Additionally, this series contains an armband (ca. 1918) with the inscription "Registered for United States Military Service" that was probably given to Miller after he registered for selective service during World War I.
