Historical note

The view that forms the basis of the collection, titled "Harvard University, Cambridge, Mass." was drawn by Alexander Jackson Davis and lithographed by William S. and John B. Pendleton of the Boston-based Pendleton's Lithography in 1828; it is commonly referred to as the Davis-Pendleton View.* Showing the University as it appeared around 1828 from the perspective of the Old Burying Ground and the present Massachusetts Avenue, the following buildings appear from left to right: Stoughton Hall, Holden Chapel, Hollis Hall, Harvard Hall, University Hall, and Massachusetts Hall. The Class Tree stands in the Holden-Hollis-Harvard yard and Holworthy Hall can be glimpsed between Stoughton and Hollis Halls. A fence surrounds the University property, with entrances from the street by Holden Chapel and at the present Johnston Gate.

Six other views, published between 1830 and 1843, are based on or follow the original Davis-Pendleton View. These include the First Hinton View, 1830; the Second Hinton View, 1834; the American Magazine View, 1835; L'Univers View, 1837; the Bromme View, ca. 1840; and the Third Hinton View, 1843.* Each of these views have subtle differences from the original, mostly in the figures that appear in the foreground. All identifying characteristics are described in the list below.
