Harvard College Class of 1844 photograph album, compiled 1867-1895

Overview

The album contains photographs of nearly all members of the Harvard College Class of 1844. There is chiefly one image per person. Some are reproducations of images from the sitter’s student days, some are probably contemporary with the receipt of the request for the photograph. Wheelright’s notes on the receipt of each image are pasted in at the front of the album.

Open for research. The album is fragile and will require special handling and supports when opened. Nails attaching the hasp to the cover are loose and care should be taken that they do not fall out.

The album contains photographs of nearly all members of the Harvard College Class of 1844. There is one image per person with the exception of Edwin A. Wild. Some are reproducations of images from the sitter's student days, some are probably contemporary with the receipt of the request for the photograph. Wheelright's notes on the receipt of each image are pasted in at the front of the album. Some photographs were duplicated for inclusion and the originals returned to the sender. Many images are duplicates of daguerreotypes. The album itself features heavy card stock supports (pages) with windows for the insertion of images.

Member of the Class of 1844 lacking

Bemis, Isaac Vose is listed as a member of the class in the Harvard University Quinquennial Catalogue of Officers and Graduates, 1636-1930, but there is no page reserved for him in the album.

Historical note

This album was compiled by Edward Wheelright, Class Secretary to the Harvard College Class of 1844, after a vote of the class in 1868 "That the Class Secretary be requested to address a circular to the members of the Class requesting them to communicate to him such information as they are willing to give as regards themselves and their lives since graduation and also in regard to other members of the Class and that the same be prepared by him and printed to be laid before the Class at its twenty-fifth Anniversary." The compilation, intended to be completed for the anniverary in 1869, continued for decades longer.
