Beginning with the Class of 1914, reading knowledge of French and German was required, as well as either an elementary knowledge of the other of these two languages or a reading knowledge of one of the Classics. Language requirements at Harvard University were changed after the 1943-1944 academic year: the new requirements prescribed only a reading knowledge of either French or German.
