Definition of Reading Examinations

Beginning with the Class of 1914, reading knowledge of French and German was required, as well as either an elementary knowledge of the other of these two languages or a reading knowledge of one of the Classics. Language requirements at Harvard University were changed after the 1943-1944 academic year: the new requirements prescribed only a reading knowledge of either French or German.
