Divisional examinations were required by some divisions and departments to receive a degree of distinction such as cum laude.
Students in most fields were required to pass an examination on their field of concentration as part of the requirement for the A. B. or S. B. degree. Such a general examination was first required in the Division of History, Government and Economics in 1911-1912, following the example of the Medical and Divinity Schools. The examination was intended to test a student's understanding of the entire field in which they are concentrating, and reflect the subject as a whole.
