Triennial Catalogue annotated by Nicholas Gilman

Overview

Nicholas Gilman (1708-1748, Harvard AB 1724, AM 1727) was a New Hampshire minister. This 1733 copy of the Harvard Triennial Catalogue was annotated by Gilman in 1737 with additional alumni biographical information. Gilman's work was a resource for the series Biographical Sketches of Graduates of Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts, 1642-1774.

This collection consists of an annotated 1733 Triennial Catalogue. The Triennial Catalogues are chronological and cumulative lists of Harvard graduates published every three years from 1674 to 1875. The Catalogues represent Harvard’s first efforts to comprehensively document its graduates and were considered the official record of degree recipients.

Historical Note

Nicholas Gilman was born in Exeter, New Hampshire on January 18, 1707/8. He graduated from Harvard in the Class of 1724, and went on to receive an AM in 1727. After graduation, Gilman taught school and acted as a substitute for area ministers in New Hampshire. On March 3, 1741/2, he was ordained in Durham, New Hampshire, where he gained notoriety as a New-Lights revivalist. Poor health plagued Gilman throughout his life, and he died on April 12, 1748.

The volume was donated July 20, 1846 by Nicholas Gilman's great-grandson Mr. Folsom.
