Overview
Color slides depict Harvard University, including University buildings in and around Harvard Yard, and Cambridge, including the Charles River and Harvard Square. A smaller number of slides show Harvard buildings on Harvard's Boston campus, in Allston and Brighton. The bulk of the slides were taken between 1943 and 1946, when William A. Withington was a student at Harvard.

Color slides depict Harvard University, including University buildings in and around Harvard Yard, and Cambridge, including the Charles River and Harvard Square. A smaller number of slides show Harvard buildings on Harvard's Boston campus, in Allston and Brighton. The bulk of the slides were taken between 1942 or 1943 and 1946, when William A. Withington was a student at Harvard. Additional slides were taken in 1952 and 1953, and two slides date from 1981, when Withington attended his thirty-fifth Harvard reunion.
Some slides depict Harvard observances of World War II , including V.E. Day and memorial services for Franklin D. Roosevelt.
Frederic B. Withington, William’s brother and also a Harvard graduate (class of 1945 (47)), is credited as photographer of two slides.
Biographical/Historical Note
William Adriance Withington (1924-2006) received his Harvard A.B. in 1946. While at Harvard, he participated in the Hasty Pudding Club, the Institute of 1770, and the Fox Club. After Harvard, Withington received an M.A. and a PhD. in Geography from Northwestern University, and taught at the University of Kentucky from 1955 to 1989. Color photography was his lifelong hobby.
