Overview
Cecil Pinsent (1884-1963) and partner Geoffrey Scott (1884-1929) became the architects of choice for Florence, Italy’s Anglo-American expatriate community at the beginning of the 20th century. Designs consist of measured plans of the main architectural features of the Villa I Tatti garden. Drawings are pencil on tracing paper. These are particularly rare, because Pinsent is known to have burned most of his records.

Historical note
Cecil Pinsent (1884-1963) and partner Geoffrey Scott (1884-1929) became the architects of choice for Florence, Italy’s Anglo-American expatriate community at the beginning of the 20th century. Their partnership and their first commission originated in the personal relationship between Geoffrey Scott and Mary Berenson. Scott became the librarian at Villa I Tatti and later the Berensons hired the team to redesign the library and gardens there. Pinsent went on to design twenty more gardens in Italy. Pinsent burned most of his records at the end of his life.
Acquisition Information
Received by the Harvard University Archives in 1965, probably in connection with Harvard’s management of the property which began in 1959 through a bequest to Harvard in the will of Bernard Berenson.

Drawing numbers were assigned by the archivist. The collection title was devised by the archivist, but titles for individual drawings were chiefly transcribed as they appear on the drawings. Drawing titles or additions to drawing titles supplied by the archivst are enclosed in square brackets. Scale informaiton was recorded as it appears on the drawings.
