The Harvard Graduate School of Education (GSE) Fellowships in Education program allowed teachers and educators to spend one year at the GSE studying a topic of their choosing. The records about Fellowships in Education document the program's administration from 1948 to 1953 and chiefly consist of records of the GSE Fellowship Committee and application materials. Also included are course records for American School 3 and 4, GSE courses that focused on case studies.

The Harvard Graduate School of Education (GSE) Office of Studies records about Fellowships in Education document the fellowship program's administration from 1948 to 1953. The series chiefly consists of records of the GSE Fellowship Committee, including correspondence between committee members, membership lists, reports on the program, minutes, and lists and rankings of fellowship candidates. Included are records of Cyril G. Sargent, James D. Laurits, and Daniel W. Marshall, who each served as Secretary to the Fellowship Committee at varying times. The records also contain applications for fellowships and correspondence with prospective and past fellows. Represented in James D. Laurits’s records are his visits to school districts around the United States to recruit potential fellow applicants, including correspondence with school administrators and notes on educators he met on his trips regarding their qualifications, classes, school environments, and personalities. Also included in Laurits’s records are materials about American School 3 and 4, courses at the Graduate School of Education. Laurits was the teaching fellow for the courses, which were taught by Francis Keppel. The courses were designed to instruct master’s students about problems that arise in schools via real-world case studies from school districts around the country. Laurits’s course records include student papers, case studies, and correspondence with teachers and school administrators about using their case studies in the courses.

Historical note on the Harvard Graduate School of Education Fellowships in Education

The Harvard Graduate School of Education (GSE) offered a Fellowships in Education program from academic year 1949/1950 through academic year 1952/1953. Fellows were teachers and educators who spent one year at the GSE studying a topic of their choosing. They did not receive a degree, but were allowed to enroll in GSE courses.
