The Harvard University Graduate School of Education Placement Office kept files on Graduate School of Education alumni in order to provide recommendations for jobs in the educational field. The records contain office files and correspondence of three staff members of the Placement Office, Miriam F. Carpenter (1920-1929), Fred C. Smith (1929-1936), and Hollis P. Allen (1936-1938).

Boxes 1 and 2 contain Carpenter's and Smith's records and chiefly consist of practice teaching records, which include correspondence with superintendents of school districts regarding student enrollment in courses at the Graduate School of Education (GSE) and job recommendations for GSE alumni. Other records include meeting minutes for the Appointment Committee and conference programs; studies of salaries, training, and experience of education workers compiled for annual reports; and records of Mabel H. Lyon, Advisor of Women, about event planning and meetings of the Women’s Organization and Student Tea Committee.
Box 3 contains Allen's records and includes correspondence with students, potential students, and colleagues, as well as memos and letters of recommendation Allen wrote for former students.
Historical note on the Graduate School of Education Career Planning and Placement Office
The Harvard Graduate School of Education Placement Office, also called the Appointment Committee and the Appointment Office, kept files on Graduate School of Education alumni in order to provide recommendations for jobs in the educational field. Miriam F. Carpenter was the Appointment Secretary from 1920 to 1929. Fred C. Smith was the Director of Placement from 1929 to 1936. Hollis P. Allen was the Director of Placement from 1936 to 1938.
Arrangement
Boxes 1 and 2 contain records from 1917-1935 and are arranged alphabetically by folder title. Box 3 contains records from 1936-1938 and are arranged alphabetically by correspondents' names.
